GOLDEN WHOLE Grain Flax Seed (Please be advised the lighting may alter the color) Botanical Name: Linum usitatissimum Origin: USA/Canada What’s the difference between golden Flax Seed and Brown Flax Seed? A recent comparison of “Dakota Gold” flax with Canadian brown-seed flax shows golden and brown seeds are very closely matched in oil content (on a dry-matter basis). … However, the brown seed surpassed the “Dakota Gold” in the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic component of that oil. What is the best flax Seed to take? Whole flaxseed passes right through your body. So ground (milled) flaxseed is best. You can buy prepared flaxseed meal, but because of its high-fat content, the ground seeds can go rancid quickly. You’re better off grinding your own, using a coffee grinder or mini food processor. Flax seed benefits could help you improve digestion, give you clear skin, lower cholesterol, reduce sugar cravings, balance hormones, fight cancer and promote weight loss… and that’s just the beginning! Doctors recommend eating ground flax for: Lowering cholesterol, reducing risk factors for heart disease and cancer, natural laxative, reducing menopausal symptoms. Recommended daily allowance is 2-3 tablespoons ground, daily. It is best to start your diet with 1 teaspoon and work your way up to 2-3 tablespoons as flax is a natural laxative. Cumin Ground Seed (Cuminum Cyminum) 100%Natural Plant Family: Apiaceae Parts Used: Seed Introduction: The common culinary herb called the cumin, is an annual herbaceous plant with a small and slender, branched stem. Even when fully mature, the cumin plant very rarely grows above a foot in height and is characterized by a somewhat angular facade. This herb bears deep green leaves which are divided into long and narrow segments, resembling another culinary herb the fennel in form, each individual leaf is usually turned back at the tips. Leaf stalks tend to be absent from the upper leaves, but long leaf stalks are characteristic of the lower leaves. Cumin bears small and white or rose-colored flowers, which have four to six rays on a stalked umbel, each individual flower being about half an inch long. The seeds of the cumin develop from these small flowers that tend to bloom during the summer. The shape of the seeds is oblong with a thicker middle part and laterally compressed tips; each individual seed is about one-fifth of an inch in length. The cumin seeds are not curved and seem to almost straight and they resemble the seeds of the caraway plant in some aspects, however, they are lighter in color and are not smooth, but tend to be bristly in texture. The cumin seeds are characterized by a peculiar odor and taste, almost akin to that of caraway seeds; however, they tend to be not as pleasing to the tastes as the caraway seeds. Health Benefits It is probably not just for taste alone that cumin has made it into the stellar ranks of Indian, Middle Eastern and Mexican cooking. This ordinary looking seed is anything but ordinary when it comes to health benefits. Iron for Energy and Immune Function Cumin seeds, whose scientific name is Cuminum cyminum, are an excellent source of iron, a mineral that plays many vital roles in the body. Iron is an integral component of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen from the lungs to all body cells, and is also part of key enzyme systems for energy production and metabolism. Additionally, iron is instrumental in keeping your immune system healthy. Iron is particularly important for menstruating women, who lose iron each month during menses. Additionally, growing children and adolescents have increased needs for iron, as do women who are pregnant or lactating. Seeds of Good Digestion Cumin seeds have traditionally been noted to be of benefit to the digestive system, and scientific research is beginning to bear out cumin’s age-old reputation. Research has shown that cumin may stimulate the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, compounds necessary for proper digestion and nutrient assimilation. Description Although the small cumin seed looks rather unassuming, it packs a punch when it comes to flavor, which can be described as penetrating and peppery with slight citrus overtones. Cumin’s unique flavor complexity has made it an integral spice in the cuisines of Mexico, India and the Middle East. Cumin seeds resemble caraway seeds, being oblong in shape, longitudinally ridged, and yellow-brown in color. This is not surprising as both cumin and caraway, as well as parsley and dill, belong to the same plant family (Umbelliferae). The scientific name for cumin is Cuminum cyminum. Cumin is available both in its whole seed form and ground into a powder. History Cumin is native to Egypt and has been cultivated in the Middle East, India, China, and Mediterranean countries for millennia. Throughout history, cumin has played an important role as a food and medicine and has been a cultural symbol with varied attributes. Cumin was mentioned in the Bible not only as a seasoning for soup and bread but also as a currency used to pay tithes to the priests. In ancient Egypt, cumin was not only Cumin seeds were highly honored as a culinary seasoning in both ancient Greek and Roman kitchens. Cumin’s popularity was partly due to the fact that its peppery flavor made it a viable replacement for black pepper, which was very expensive and hard to come by. Cumin was also noted for both its medicinal and cosmetic properties. Its application to induce a pallid complexion was frequently employed by many students trying to convince their teachers that they had pulled “all-nighters” studying for their classes. Although a much-prized spice, cumin became a symbol of frugality and greed in ancient Rome. Both Marcus Aurelius and Antoninus Pius, emperors with a reputation for their avarice, were given nicknames that included reference to cumin. During the Middle Ages in Europe, cumin was one of the most common spices used. Around that time, cumin added another attribute to its repertoire—it became recognized as a symbol of love and fidelity. People carried cumin in their pockets when attending wedding ceremonies, and married soldiers were sent off to war with a loaf of cumin bread baked by their wives. Cumin’s use for fortifying love is also represented in certain Arabic traditions in which a paste of ground cumin, pepper and honey are thought to have aphrodisiac properties. While it still maintained an important role in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines, the popularity of cumin in Europe declined after the Middle Ages. Today, cumin is experiencing renewed recognition owing to a newfound appreciation of its culinary and therapeutic properties. How to Select and Store Whenever possible, buy whole cumin seeds instead of cumin powder since the latter loses its flavor more quickly, and the seeds can be easily ground with a mortar and pestle. Even through dried herbs and spices are widely available in supermarkets, explore the local spice stores or ethnic markets in your area. Oftentimes, these stores feature an expansive selection of dried herbs and spices that are of superior quality and freshness compared to those offered in regular markets. Just like with other dried spices, grown dried cumin since this will give you more assurance that it has not been irradiated. Cumin seeds and cumin powder should be kept in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark and dry place. Ground cumin will keep for about six months, while the whole seeds will stay fresh for about one year. Tips for Preparing and Cooking Tips for Cooking with Cumin To bring out the fullness of their aroma and flavor, lightly roast whole cumin seeds before using them in a recipe. MUST ADD 5 TO CART!!!MUST ADD 5 TO CART!!MUST ADD 5 TO CART! Sage Crushed Leaves (Salvia officinalis) 100%Natural What makes our leaves different than other sellers is they are smaller making it easier to mix into food or drinks. Salvia officinalis is a perennial, evergreen subshrub, with woody stems, grayish leaves, and blue to purplish flowers. It is a member of the family Lamiaceae and is native to the Mediterranean region, though it has naturalized in many places throughout the world. It has a long history of medicinal and culinary use, and in modern times as an ornamental garden plant. The common name “sage” is also used for a number of related and unrelated species. Salvia officinalis has been used since ancient times for warding off evil, snakebites, increasing women’s fertility, and more. The Romans likely introduced it to Europe from Egypt as a medicinal herb Cultivars are quite variable in size, leaf and flower color, and foliage pattern, with many variegated leaf types. The Old World type grows to approximately 2 ft (0.61 m) tall and wide, with lavender flowers most common, though they can also be white, pink, or purple. The plant flowers in late spring or summer. The leaves are oblong, ranging in size up to 2.5 in (6.4 cm) long by 1 in (2.5 cm) wide. Leaves are grey-green, rugose on the upper side, and nearly white underneath due to the many short soft hairs. Modern cultivars include leaves with purple, rose, cream, and yellow in many variegated combinations Health Benefits Of Sage Cognitive Boost: Research has shown that even small amounts of sage, whether smelled or consumed, can increase recall abilities and memory retention in subjects. The brain activity also demonstrates increased concentration and focus on a chosen topic, which means that for young people in school or for those in challenging, intellectually demanding careers, adding a bit of it to your diet may be a subtle, but effective brain booster. Inflammation Issues: Chewing on sage leaves is not always the most pleasant remedy, as the flavor can be quite intense, but this may be the most effective way to get the compounds acting in your system the fastest. Creating a tincture or steeping leaves can also do the trick, but if you suffer from inflammatory issues, particularly in the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts, you can eliminate that inflammation with this sage brew. The anti-inflammatory qualities of sage extend to health issues such as arthritis and gout, as well as general inflammation of the cardiovascular system, which can result in heart disease and increased blood pressure. The flavonoids and phenolic compounds found in it are responsible for these beneficial effects. Antioxidant Impact: Chronic conditions and degenerative diseases can be some of the most debilitating and dangerous health concerns that you face in your life. Many of these health issues are caused by free radicals, the dangerous by-products of cellular metabolism that attack healthy cells, causing apoptosis or mutation. Antioxidant compounds found in sage, such as rosmarinic acid, luteolin, and apigenin, can all work to neutralize free radicals and prevent them from creating oxidative stress in the heart, organ systems, skin, joints, muscles, and even the brain. Immune System Strength: There are some antimicrobial properties that have been identified in sage, and while it is usually consumed in relatively small quantities, you can create a topical application of sage (salve or tincture) and use it to prevent bacterial and viral infections that attack the body through the skin. We often think of illness entering through our nose or mouth, but the skin can also be compromised and be used as a gateway for foreign agents. A topical cream or antibacterial routine that includes sage could be an extra line of defense against that sort of illness vector. Bone Strength: One of the most overlooked benefits of sage is actually its superior level of vitamin K, an essential vitamin for the body that isn’t found in many common foods. Vitamin K is a crucial element in developing bone density and ensuring the integrity of our bones as we age. If you suffer from early signs of osteoporosis or have lived a rather nutrient-poor, sedentary lifestyle, your bone health is likely low. Adding sage leaves to your diet can increase your vitamin K levels significantly, as a single service has 27% of your daily recommended intake. Skin Conditions: A topical salve can be created using sage leaves or a tincture of the plant that has been shown to be effective against certain skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and acne. These unsightly blemishes can be quickly soothed and their appearance can be reduced gradually if you regularly apply sage extracts and salves to the inflamed or affected area. Sage info Diabetes Management: There may be some debate about the efficacy of sage on certain health conditions explained above, but when it comes to diabetes, there is widespread agreement. It contains certain extracts and chemicals that mimic the drugs typically prescribed for managing diabetes. It appears to regulate and inhibit the release of stored glucose in the liver, preventing major fluctuations of blood sugar, which can help to prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes, or at least manage the condition if it has already manifested. Digestion: The rosmarinic acid found in sage acts as an anti-inflammatory agent in many parts of the body, even in the stomach, where it prevents gastric spasms and can significantly lower the occurrence of diarrhea and gastritis for patients suffering from the uncomfortable and embarrassing conditions. Adding it to your meals can get your entire digestive process back on track and reduce inflammation throughout the gut.DISCLAIMER: By ordering, you the customer, accept full responsibility that the product will be used in a rational and informed manner. When you order a 4 lb. bag you will be receiving TWO 2 lb. bagsWhen you order a 5 Lb. bag you will be receiving TWO 2.5 Lb bags. Chose from the drop-down menu Packed in a clear heat sealed food grade bag. Sage Rubbed LeavesGround Sage(Salvia officinalis) 100%Natural What makes our leaves different than other sellers is they are smaller making it easier to mix into food or drinks.Salvia officinalis is a perennial, evergreen subshrub, with woody stems, grayish leaves, and blue to purplish flowers. It is a member of the family Lamiaceae and is native to the Mediterranean region, though it has naturalized in many places throughout the world. It has a long history of medicinal and culinary use, and in modern times as an ornamental garden plant. The common name “sage” is also used for a number of related and unrelated species.Salvia officinalis has been used since ancient times for warding off evil, snake bites, increasing women’s fertility, and more. The Romans likely introduced it to Europe from Egypt as a medicinal herbCultivars are quite variable in size, leaf and flower color, and foliage pattern, with many variegated leaf types. Modern cultivars include leaves with purple, rose, cream, and yellow in many variegated combinations Health Benefits Of SageCognitive Boost: Research has shown that even small amounts of sage, whether smelled or consumed, can increase recall abilities and memory retention in subjects. The brain activity also demonstrates increased concentration and focus on a chosen topic, which means that for young people in school or for those in challenging, intellectually demanding careers, adding a bit of it to your diet may be a subtle, but effective brain booster.Inflammation Issues: Chewing on sage leaves is not always the most pleasant remedy, as the flavor can be quite intense, but this may be the most effective way to get the compounds acting in your system the fastest. MUST ADD 5 TO CART!!!MUST ADD 5 TO CART!!MUST ADD 5 TO CART! GROUND CORIANDER POWDER Its scientific name is Coriandrum Sativum L. Its leaves and fruits have a recognizable and pleasant aroma and are commonly used raw or dried for culinary applications. Ground coriander is one of the sweeter spices out there, which is odd considering the leaf of the coriander plant – what we call cilantro – is often called spicy and herbal. It is often described as sweet and floral with hints of white pepper and Navel orange. You might call it cultivated, both in agricultural and worldly senses. The flavors make coriander powder a popular spice across all oceans, from Portugal to Mexico, to India. Ground coriander powder goes stale quickly so use it within six months and, as with all spices, store in an airtight container in a dark and dry space. Any baker would be livid without ground coriander to add to pumpkin pies, sweet potato pancakes, apple cakes, spice cookies, homemade granola, or kugel. Coriander-Maple Granola 4 cups rolled oats 1 cup pecans, chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3/4 cup maple syrup 1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 T orange juice 2 T orange zest 1 cup dried apricots 1. Preheat your oven to 350ºF and adjust the top rack to the middle of the oven. Place the oats, pecans, coriander powder, and cinnamon in a large bowl and mix together. Whisk together the maple syrup, vanilla, orange juice and zest, and brown sugar in a saucepan and place over medium heat until almost smooth. 2. Pour syrup mixture over oats mixture. Stir gently to combine and the oats are well-coated. Spread out onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil. Bake for twenty minutes. Cool completely. (If some of the granola is still sticky and wet bake it for another 7-10 minutes.) Break into pieces and add the dried apricots. Store in an airtight container.
